What Should I Wear For My Race Tomorrow?

I am totally a wimp when it comes to cold weather.

As a Florida native, I break out the sweaters and scarves when the temperatures drop into the low 60s. You think I’m kidding.

We have had really warm weather here lately, and I even remember being concerned last weekend about how warm it would be for the half marathon. Well, not anymore. As of right now, here is the forecast for tomorrow:

While I’m not really concerned about running in that weather (it will probably feel nice actually!), my big concern is what to wear.

Such a typical girl, right? :)

It’s still in the 60s here today so it is hard to imagine it will be that cold tomorrow morning. But I’m trying to plan ahead.

My last race, the St Pete Beach Classic 10k had 40 degree weather when we started and this is what I wore:

But as you can tell from my pushed up sleeves, I got pretty warm around mile four and started wishing I could take off my jacket.

I had been planning to wear the same thing I wore on my last long run for the race tomorrow:

But if the “feels like” temperate is 35 degrees, I’m afraid I’ll be FREEZING.

I’m playing with the idea of wearing “throw away” clothing – but I’m trying to make sure it’s something I wouldn’t mind wearing for the whole race in case I am cold.

Ahh…too many choices!

If you run in cold weather, please help this Florida girl out…

What should I wear for my race tomorrow?!?!?

For my last race (OUC Half) that was cold in the morning I wore a long sleeve dri-fit shirt over a tank top and when I got warm I took my long sleeve shirt off and tied it around my waist. I like all my running clothes too much to just toss something! Hope this helps. :)

  2. I’d wear the tank top with arm sleeves – then tuck the arm sleeves into your running tights if you get too hot.

  3. Tricky! I had a similar problem in January. I ran in Boston, but it was shockingly not cold! I chose not to wear my planned gloves and earwarmers, but did wear black long sleeves with my crop pants. I ended up sweaating in 50 degrees, which felt warmer because of the sun. Do NOT forget how warming the SUN can be!!!

That all said: if I were you, I’d go outside day-of in the Wannabe Runner tank and crop pants and see how you feel. If you’re really freezing, bring some kind of sleeved-zip-up, but if you can, try to stick it out with the short sleeves and crop pants. You’ll warm yourself up in no time!

  4. I say wear your tank top with a long sleeved tech tee that you’ve run in before over it. That way if you do get hot you can tie the long sleeved shirt around your waist. And if it stays cool you know you’ll be in a shirt that’s comfortable enough to run a long distance in.

Hope you have a great run tomorrow!!

I live in Wisconsin, and MANY months are spent running in chilly weather! I agree with Meredith and Rachel–wear running capris and a long sleeves over your Wannabe Runner.

Good luck tomorrow! I found your blog a couple weeks ago and have loved reading through all of your posts! You’ve given me so much motivation!

  6. Great tshirt. I am with Janice – arm sleeves and your shirt.

  7. I’m with Janice. Wear the tank top and a pair of arm sleeves if you have them. If you don’t, maybe hit up Target or Walmart for a pair of knee socks and just cut off the feet. Or legwarmers in a size small. Although, if you’re in Florida, maybe they don’t carry knee socks! (Not a problem here in New England!)

  8. I’d start out with the tank top and a lightweight fleece or running jacket..then you can take it off mid-race and “ta-da” everyone with your awesome tank top!!

My advice is have a hat or gloves. For me, as long as my head and hands are warm the rest of me is good. The tank is something you want to show off, so I would go with the tank, capris, hat and gloves. Maybe bring a simple long sleeve shirt that you can wear while waiting in corrals then toss once you start.

  10. Arm sleeves or a shirt you can tie around your waist. (I’ve been known to cut the toes off of my husband’s sports socks and wear those as arm warmers too).

    Good luck tomorrow!

  11. i start with a long sleeve shirt or jacket. i’ve seen people wear ones that they aren’t worried about getting back and then once they’re warm they throw them to the side of the race route.

or if you have cheerleaders along the way you could hand it off to them!

Good luck tomorrow!! i’m so excited for you!!! :)

  12. I’m useless because I moved from PA to escape cold, came to S. FL and right tonite on my side of state its supposed to be 43 and I freeze when it gets below 76!!!
    good luck!!!
