The One That Got Away {Sarasota Half Marathon}

Have you ever put off registering for a race just a little too long?

That happened to me this year.

I’ve heard from Theresa how awesome the Sarasota Half Marathon is many times before. I grew up in Sarasota county. I ran part of the course at the 1DayRelay. It is absolutely beautiful.

But for some reason, I just didn’t sign up.

There were a lot of reasons. First, I had no idea how quickly I would bounce back from my first half marathon – or if I would even want to do another one!

But as you all know by now, that answer is clearly YES – I definitely want to do another one.

Second, the price always scared me off for some reason. Not that it was that expensive when I first started looking at the race. But the more I put it off, the more expensive it became.

But then again, look at those medals! Meghann and I saw them in person at the RnR Expo and wow are they impressive. Speaking of the Expo, they had a deal for $20 off the price which would have made it only $75. But again I chickened out. Grr. (I did sign up to win a free entry, but I haven’t heard anything back yet so I’m guessing that I didn’t win it. Boo.)

And then they posted these photos of their awesome race bibs on their Facebook page. How cool are these things?? Right down to the QR code that you can scan to check out your finishing time!

Everything about this races appears to be so well done – from the medals, to the t-shirts, even down to the race bibs!

But now we are less than a month away and sadly, I just can’t afford the $95 entry fee at this stage of the game. But Sarasota Half Marathon, if you’re reading, please feel free to send a comp entry my way!

And don’t worry – I won’t be missing out on this one next year!

If you’re currently contemplating signing up for a race, but haven’t convinced yourself to commit yet, take my advice. Sign up TODAY. Don’t wait like I did.

Because if you do, I reserve the right to come back and say, “I told you so.” :)

Have you ever missed a race because you put off registering too long?

  1. I’ve never run a race before but I’d like to run a half marathon in June. I’ve only been running for 3 months (I can run 3.5 miles) and while I physically feel like I could run this race, mentally I just don’t know. You just tipped the scales a little bit in favor of going ahead and signing up for it. :-) I’m still not 100% there yet. Thankfully top price is only $75.

  2. I really wanted to do the relay at this one (same medal!), but that is Eckerd College reunion weekend, so I had to actually let Chad have a weekend. Next year!

  3. Make sure you keep an eye on Craiglist as you get closer to the race. Disney events ALWAYS have bibs for sale! It’s controversial, but it’s better than banditing.

  4. Just signed up for the Broad Street Run (10 miler in Philly) and apparently it sells out in 1 day. I signed up immediately when the registrated started, but I know people were having trouble getting into the system only an hour after! Crazy!

  5. I would love to do that one too! I was going back and forth, but it is the week right after Gasparilla, so I chose to do the hometown race instead! I will have to keep that one on my radar for next year!

  6. How on earth did I miss how awesome that medal is???? Now I’m even more excited for SRQ! You will definitely have to run this one next year. This will be my 5th or 6th time running it and even back when the medals were still tiny it was a GREAT event!

  7. I wish I could register for the Sarasota half! I’m signed up for Gasparilla and I think that running a race two weekends in a row would be a little too much :)

  8. I love the QR code on the bib! Hopefully more races will be doing that with all the smart phones out there. Crossing fingers that you get the free entry =)
