It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye…

Any other Boyz II Men fans out there?

You may remember, I bought my first pair of Brooks back in September.

Those shoes have carried me though a 10k PR…

Through my FIRST ever half marathon

Through my second half marathon

Through several 5ks, a relay and through training for my upcoming half marathon.

But there’s no denying it. My shoes have seen better days.

And it makes me sad. I’m having a hard time letting go. I can’t believe I’m feeling sentimental over a pair of shoes!

I love my Mizuno Wave Creation 13s, but I accidently got them a half size too small. They are great for shorter runs (I even ran my last 5k in them) but they start bothering my toes after three miles.

I really wish I had gotten them in the right size because I love the way they fit my foot. They’re not technically a “support” shoe, but they cradle my semi-high arch perfectly. I’ve noticed that my Brooks Ghost 4s have completely lost all arch support and my ankles were aching after my five mile run on Saturday. My Mizuno’s also make me wonder if the Ghost style ever had enough arch support for me.

So what should I do? Should I finally retire my beloved Brooks? Should I buy the Mizuno’s I love in a half size bigger? Or should I just go back to the drawing board?

What is your all-time favorite pair of shoes? Anyone else have a hard time letting go?

  1. Oh no! I am terrified the day I have to give up my running shoes. Being the first pair I have ever had, I have learned to love them – even though I’m not 100% sure they are THE shoe for me. I have the Asics gt2160. But my big toes are starting to poke through the top – it’s almost time… 🙁
I think I will go to one of the local running stores and get a few professional reccommendations. I have high arches as well, but really like a light weight shoe.

  2. I’m a Brooks rookie, but after only a month, I’m in love! I have the Ravennas, and they are Ah-May-Zing. I don’t think I’ll ever go back to another brand. <3

  3. I’d say it’s definitely time to get new shoes, especially if you are starting to feel aches and pains on your runs. It’s hard to let go of a trusty pair of shoes that have taken you pretty far!

I just made the switch to Brooks Adrenalines and I am liking them so far.

  4. I think you should give the shoes to your mother …who wears a half size smaller than you…lol

That’s a hard one! I have a pair of mizuno – actually, I’ve had many pairs. I keep buying the same shoe, same size, every 4-6 months. I’m nervous to try something new, not right fit, new blister, all those worries. But I think my mizuno’s have finally been retired and I need to branch out. I plan on going to the running store to figure it out.
    Good Luck!

  6. Mizuno Wave Riders all the way! On my 5th pair and I still have them all…yes, I have a hard time saying good bye. They each hold a special place in my heart =)

Go shoe shopping! Finding “the” pair of running shoes is just as thrilling as finding “the” perfect heels 🙂

  8. I have a pair of over-the-counter arch supports that I use in all my running shoes – that way I don’t need to worry about that aspect. Other than that, you need to find the pair that fits you best – and it’s rarely the one that your friends like. 🙂

  9. I JUST bought the Wave Creation 13s! Can’t wait to try them.

  10. I’d totally get the Mizunos in a half size bigger. Some running stores let you exchange them for the right size if you have a problem. You could check and see!

  11. I’ve been running in the Mizuno Wave Inspire 8s and I love them!!!! They are my first pair of real running shoes and I’ve definitely learned that good shoes are worth the $!

  12. It makes me sad to get rid of shoes too!! So many memories and miles logged! I tried to venture away from the Nike Brand but ended up having lots of pain with my new shoes. So I did what any nostalgic run freak would do…I hunted down the originals on Ebay and bought another pair. So I guess I’m wearing clones? I know one day I’ll have to switch again, but I’m trying not to think about it 😉

  13. I say retire them … you have WAY enough miles to need new shoes. Then, I would go to a running store and have them check your feet and analyze your gait and have “pros” pick shoes for you! I will never get running shoes any other way now haha.

  14. I really want to bronze my first pair of running shoes. Is that weird? 🙂 I won’t throw them away.

If you found the shoes you like, I’d stick with them. Hopefully, the model you have of the Brooks are last season and you will be able to find more on sale online. I’d start with buying the Mizunos in a size larger though.

  15. I think it’s time for a new pair. I am always up for trying new things, so I totally say, go see what else is out there to try now. : ) However, if you found the pair of your dreams that you know do well for your feet, then you may want to stick to those.

  16. If you love the mizunos buy them in the right size!
I wear newtons and love them.

  17. I had a pair of Mizunos for my first running shoes, and just got Brooks (I think the same as yours!) in the fall and I love them both. I definitely agree with going to a running store and getting fit for new shoes. I still have my Mizunos though for other workouts and for my mud run this year, so you don’t have to give up either! 🙂

Try Asics! They are all I’ve ever had, and love them!

  19. I remember being very sad when I finally tossed my FIRST pair of running shoes, the ones I did C25K with. Since then, I’ve not been so attached. I’ve tried Asics and Sauconys, but my favorites so far are the ones I’m using now, which are Adidas. I need super stability shoes, since I have flat feet and extremely overpronate, especially my right foot. The Adidas Adistar Salvation have been awesome. I have two pair, and totally plan to buy them again when necessary.

  20. Definitely get the Mizunos a size bigger. Especially if you like them that much! I have a hard time letting go of shoes too. Im holding on to more than I care to admit for “gym shoes”.

  21. I’m funny with my running shoes. I have a hard time saying goodbye, but I also LOVE getting new ones! In fact, I really need new ones as well. I’ll be parting with my first pair of Brooks (Adrenaline), too… and I have loved them. However, I wouldn’t mind trying something different. I’ll probably go to Fleet Feet and have them fit me again… just ’cause it’s fun!

My favorite pair of running shoes are the ones I have right now. They are the Saucony ProGrid 5’s! I LOVE them. Plus, they’re bright pink! Honestly, I think you should retire your Brooks. Old shoes will eventually give you shin splints or something else because you don’t have the support you need. I say go & get a new pair of the Mizuno’s that you love.

  23. I say go for the new shoes. I wrote an ode to an old pair of running shoes too!
