Ambitious Or Just Plain Crazy?

I received an email last week that caught me off guard.

Oh riighhhtt…I did register for the Women’s Half Marathon, didn’t I?

I forgot.

I wonder what the women in Corral 3 would think if I showed up with my gigantic belly on race day?

No, I’m not even remotely thinking about running/walking the half marathon. I’m not THAT crazy.

I could drop down and do the 5k. That’s actually what I did last year.

Here are some factors going into my decision:

  • I’ll be almost 38 weeks pregnant.
  • I haven’t walked more than a mile at a time in a long while – but I do still feel like I could.
  • It’s a walker-friendly course – but you still have to finish in an hour.
  • I’m planning to deliver at a hospital in St Pete (where the race is) so if I go into labor, at least I’ll be close!
I really can’t decide. I’m planning to go to the race expo on Friday (I’ll be in St Pete anyway for a doctor’s appointment) so I may switch to the 5k and just see how I feel on Sunday. At the very least, I plan to spectate the half marathon – my best friend Katie is running it and I have to cheer her on!

So what are your thoughts on the 5k? Ambitious or just plain crazy?

  1. I’m not a doctor, BUT I think that the walk would be just fine! You are close to a hospital in that area, and it would be a great way to emphasize the “Athlete” part of your name in a safe manner.
I may be home that day, may need to go out of town- but if I’m around, I’ll cheer you on just as you did with me this time last year 🙂

I walked a 5K at exactly 41 weeks pregnant in hopes it would send me into labor…it didn’t work! But I was perfectly fine and it was a nice distraction.

  3. No one knows better than you! See how you feel Sunday. I plan to go to the expo Saturday morning with a few other TBLBs. Maybe I’ll finally meet you IRL one of these days!

Go for it! If you’re up to it, then sign up. It’s not the end of the world if you can’t finish, right?

  5. Do it!! If anything, it will put you into labor. Or just thinking about doing it will put you into labor. Plus, you tell your daughter some day that you were in a 5K right before she was born 🙂

    Just plain crazy. Sorry 🙁

  7. I’ve never been pregnant, but I think I’d probably give it a shot too if I felt ok. Good luck with the decision – and not crazy!

I’m six days overdue with my third, I say if you can do it, go for it. If you go into labor, all the better. Better early then late! (My second was 11 days early and I feel these last three weeks have really been the hardest in the whole pregnancy.)

Why not? If you’re healthy and the pregnancy is low risk and the weather is nice, go for it. Though if there’s someone who could be at mile 1 waiting for you it would be nice. That way if you get there and want to stop, you can.

If you’re feeling good and up to it, I say go for it! Don’t put any pressure on yourself so that if you feel like stopping after 1.5 miles or 2 then do it. No shame in trying. I think you can do it. Looking forward to seeing you do it! The way you’ll feel and the pics when you review them later on will be soo inspiring to crush other fitness goals/challenges.

  11. I think as long as you listen to your body you’ll be fine. If you get a mile into it and feel like you’re done, be done. Who cares, it’s just for fun so you don’t have to push yourself to do anything beyond what is comfortable 🙂

  12. Do it and then have breakfast with us. Mmkay? 🙂

Get you doc’s okay and see how you’re feeling. If all is good – go for it!! I did a 5k at 39 weeks and it felt great! It definitely took longer than normal, but it was fun. Good luck mama!

  14. You’re too cute! I think you should walk it as long as you’re feeling good. It will give you something else to think about before the big day and who knows when the next time you’ll get to join in something fun like this will be. You’ll be a busy mama of two!

  15. I’ll be spectating the half, too! My mom and her coworker are running it so I’m going to be there cheering them on. 🙂 Maybe we’ll bump (no pun intended?) into each other!

I apologize if you get a duplicate comment from me. I think there is no harm in trying. If you feel good and you can finish, good for you. If you need to stop at any point there will be no harm done. I think it would be OK. Of course I am not doctor. I say go for it.
