The Art of Eating One-Handed: Picky Bars Giveaway!

Becoming a parent means that you will never again take eating with utensils for granted. Your hands always seem to be busy holding a baby, a diaper bag, a carseat…or all three at one time.

Combine that with a busy job where you’re always eating on the go, and it becomes very difficult to find healthy things to eat. Can anyone relate?

I had the opportunity recently to review an awesome “on the go” product that passes the one-handed eating test with flying colors.

Picky Bars!

Do you remember when I volunteered at the Rev3 Triathlon here in Venice?

When I looked up the winner, Jesse Thomas, I learned that not only is he a professional triathlete, but he is also the CEO of a company called Picky Bars. See the logo on his trisuit?

He was such an awesome, personable guy that when his company reached out to me to try Picky Bars, I couldn’t wait to see what they were all about.

What are Picky Bars? They are “Real Food Balanced for Sport” – gluten and dairy-free energy bars made of only real food, with balanced nutrient ratios for endurance and recovery.

Jesse’s wife Lauren (track and field athlete) and her friend Stephanie actually created the bars while they were injured together and came up with a winning recipe. They needed something with the right nutrient ratios for their training, while also accommodating Steph’s celiac disease and Jesse’s gluten and dairy intolerance.

Well, I’m not really competing in any endurance sports right now (unless breastfeeding counts?) but I can definitely get behind the real food concept. I love that there are no ingredients in these bars you won’t recognize. All good stuff.

My favorite flavor?

YUM. You can’t go wrong when the flavor includes the words “Peanut Butter Booyah.” Can I get an amen?

My runner up? “Smooth Caffeinator.” Delicious.

You can buy the bars right on their website. And no, they didn’t pay me for this post, nor do I make any money if you buy their bars. I just love the idea of supporting a small business (read their story here) and they seriously ARE the best energy bars I’ve ever tasted!

Want to try Picky Bars? Enter to win a Sample Pack of their awesome flavors! Just leave a comment below telling me about your favorite one-handed snack. (I need ideas!) Sorry, giveaway is open to U.S. residents only. Entries close on Monday at 7pm EST so don’t delay!

I love Luna bars! For a healthier snack, veggies, like baby carrots, snap peas, etc, are great!

  2. Jill

Peanut butter on a spoon while holding a baby or two 🙂

  3. Elizabeth

I love just grabbing an apple on the go, or a pear. Quick, easy, and you can eat 1-handed. 🙂

  4. Kim

I would go with a banana or peanut butter on a spoon. Runner-up would be a tortilla or wrap with all kinds of goodies inside. I guess this would take two hands to make but only one hand to eat!

  5. Autumn

Mmmm, I like to eat tortillas plain when I’m in a hurry. Also, lightly steamed snap peas are a nice snack.

  6. Precut veggies in hummus is always a winner with me! Fruit like apples and bananas are great (if you have someone to open the banana!), and I also love brownies:)

  7. Yum!!! Favorite one-hand snack? Hmmm… greek yogurt? I can eat that with one hand haha or homemade protein bars.

  8. Lisa

I pretty much love fruit as an easy snack especially clementines 🙂 I also LOVE larabars.

  9. Danielle M.

My favorite one handed snack as of late is a simple apple!

  10. The picky bars sound delicious. My favorite one handed snack would have to be apples. I probably eat too many, but there are worse things to overdo it on.

  11. Yum! I love Picky Bars! Just started following your blog! My favorite one handed snack is string cheese! I get part-skim, low fat mozzarella and it’s high in protein so it’s perfect for a 3pm snack when I’m at work!

  12. Those bars look awesome! If I’m ever on the go I always grab a bar, banana or apple. Sometimes even a bag of natural almonds that I put in my lap while driving 🙂

  13. All in Almond Picky Bars! I will eat them all day if I could?!

  14. I don’t have a favorite one handed snack, but I’m loving some of the suggestions here! These bars sound delicious, off to order a few to sample!

  15. Laurel C

Ooooh yum!! I love thick, chewy, dense bars! I usually snack on raw nuts and fruit

  16. MelissaC

I can make any snack one-handed…lol. Love Luna bars (chocolate peanut butter is my fave), bananas, almonds. Any of those get me good to go! Picky Bars look super yummy – never heard of them before. I like that they were developed by someone who is IN the sport and knows what they need and how they wanted them made, that is cool!

  18. Cathy Wilson

  25. Amanda

Banana with almond butter is my fave snack!

  26. Let’s be honest, almost all fresh veggies/fruits require two hands. Either to peel it open, dip it, or to switch hands to shake off the juices. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried to multi task working while eating an apple and typing with the other one hand and drop my drippy apple in my lap or on the floor 🙁

I have been following the picky bars brand for while, but haven’t had an opportunity to try one yet. The smooth caffienator sounds right up my alley!

  27. Jen

  35. Beth @RxBethOnTheRun

I don’t have kids, but being a pharmacist, I am all to familiar with the art of eating one-handed! Let’s be honest, most snacks require two hands to get started. I find the easiest go to snack , assuming it’s already washed of course, is an apple. I was able to “dance” all around the pharmacy, even with the phone in my ear while on hold, and still be able to snack on an apple. I’ve snacked on Kind Bars as well, but I would LOVE to finally try Picky Bars!

  36. I like the ProBars because they are essentially a meal in one bar, but I’ve always wanted to try PickyBars!

  49. Pb and banana sandwich is good for one hand, and filling too! No prep snack is an apple or pear though

  51. Lyndsay S.

I love to make big batches of healthy muffins and freeze them. It was easy the first few weeks after my son was born to take one out when I got up in the morning and it was defrosted in time for a mid morning snack.

  52. Sarah L

These look great. I recently had a baby, too, so I’m also eating a lot of one-handed snacks. I’ve been enjoying V8.
